Robach and Holmes explained on the latest episode of their podcast how they tried to portray “picture-perfect” images of their lives while their marriages were in trouble
Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes are done hiding.
During the June 10 episode of their podcast Amy & T.J., which was filmed live in New York City, the former GMA3 cohosts reflected on the end of their marriages. Holmes, 46, and his ex Marilee Fiebig settled their divorce weeks after his relationship with Robach, 51, became public; Robach, meanwhile, finalized her divorce from Andrew Shue in March, according to Page Six.
But Robach and Holmes knew their marriages were over long before they were each officially divorced.
“Between the two of us sitting on this stage, there are now four divorces,” Holmes said on the episode. “This is where the private shame comes in. We had very perfect-looking families and perfect-looking lives, and we were guilty at times of putting out an image of our lives that we knew was not true.”
Holmes, for his part, admitted to wearing his wedding ring on GMA3 just for show and even fooling the driver who picked him up for work in the morning by getting picked up at the old address he shared with Fiebig.
Robach recalled posting a picture on social media, which she eventually took down, of an idyllic scene from Greece in July 2022.
“I posted a picture with a beautiful sunset behind me, and if you saw it, I believe it said, ‘Good night, Athens,’ was the caption,” she said, adding, “It looked like a rosy picture of a beautiful marriage, just picture-perfect in every way.”
“I posted it, because I actually got a text from a friend who said, ‘Some of us are concerned. We’re not seeing pictures of you two like we used to on your Instagram,’” Robach continued. “I immediately was so afraid that anyone I knew would know or would think that something was wrong. I didn’t want anyone to think anything was wrong, and so I posted that picture.”
In the months that followed their GMA exit and divorces, the pair have become more visible, proudly making their red carpet debut as a couple at iHeartRadio’s Jingle Ball in December 2023. That same month, Holmes and Robach also launched their podcast Amy & T.J., which became a platform for them to discuss their relationship on their own terms. (They even worked out their “communication kinks” during one particularly raw episode in January.)
Holmes and Robach, who have also openly discussed engagement rings and the topic of marriage, now say they’ve put their private shame behind them.
“We still have some work to do … maybe on dealing with public shaming and walking down the street thinking everybody hates us, despises us, thinks we’re the worst people in the world,” Holmes acknowledged. “We have we were getting better about that. The private shame is done.”
