Why did Messi refuse Saudi Arabia’s ‘mountain of money’ and not return to Barca?

Lionel Messi recently presented the reason why he did not return to Barca or accept an invitation from Saudi Arabia.

In the past 1 month, news about Messi’s future has received a lot of attention from fans after the player confirmed his departure from PSG at the end of the season.

A series of big articles have talked about Messi returning to Barca or accepting a move to play in Saudi Arabia. However, after all the decision of the Argentina captain surprised many people when he agreed to join Inter Miami Club from MLS (USA).

According to many sources, the 35-year-old player will sign a four-year contract and receive a salary of 50 million euros per season. Notably, this number is even lower than what PSG used to pay for the Argentine superstar (64 million euros/season).

Barca fans must be the ones who are feeling the most disappointment at the moment, because this is a good opportunity to bring the legend of the team back to the club.

In an interview on Diario Sport, the player 𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧 in 1987 revealed the reason why he could not return to Barca or choose to participate in the tournament in Saudi Arabia.

Specifically, he said: “I really want to return, I’m glad I had the opportunity to come back, but on the other hand, after going through what happened 3 years ago, I had to leave under such circumstances. Like, I don’t want to be in the same situation again. I really don’t want that’.

“I don’t know if Barca tried hard to bring me back. I just heard from Xavi. But I’m sure there are people at Barca who don’t want me back. We never wanted to leave the city of Barcelona. If it was a matter of money, I would have gone to Saudi Arabia or elsewhere. My decisions have never been based on money.

‘Barca sent me an offer, but never a formal offer signed in writing. Without the black and white paper, we cannot make any decisions. We don’t even talk about money officially. A lot has been said, a lot has been leaked, a lot of lies have been fabricated, but unfortunately I cannot go out and deny all that is being said.
