Billie Eilish Breaks Her Tie With Taylor Swift As She Scores Another Major No. 1 Hit

After initially settling for second place, Billie Eilish’s new single “What Was I Made For?” jumps one spot to hit No. 1 on this week’s edition of Billboard’s Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart. The tune brings the young performer back to the summit and as it reaches the peak position, the cut helps her make history on the ranking.

“What Was I Made For?” marks Eilish’s third No. 1 on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart. With another leader now to her credit, the Grammy winner breaks out of her tie with Taylor Swift. Until this frame, the two were tied for the most champions on the list of the most-consumed rock and alternative cuts in the U.S. among women. Both had snagged a pair of winners, but now Eilish has pulled ahead.

Eilish first reached the No. 1 spot on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart in 2020 with her single “My Future.” The following year, she repeated the feat with “Happier Than Ever.” Among all of her releases, she has accrued 11 top 10 hits on the tally, including a trio that stalled at No. 2, as “Everything I Wanted,” “Therefore I Am,” and “Your Power” only missed out on ruling by one space.

For her part, Swift now claims the second-most No. 1 hits among solo women on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart. She sent both “Cardigan” and “Willow” to the top spot, while they also managed to rule the Hot 100 at the same time. Those songs fronted her two surprise albums that came in 2020, Folklore and Evermore.

Among all artists, Eilish is now tied with two others for the third-most No. 1s in the history of the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart. She is currently on the same level as both Foo Fighters and Linkin Park, with three apiece. Imagine Dragons lead all artists, with five champions. Twenty One Pilots come in second place, with four rulers.

“What Was I Made For?” was released as one of the last singles from the Barbie soundtrack, as the tune was written and composed specifically for the film. It has since climbed into the top 20 on the Hot 100, and it is still just getting started. The tune is also an international smash, reaching the top 10 on many rankings all around the world.
