In 2017, the world witnessed the release of Wonder Woman, a groundbreaking film directed by Patty Jenkins. This cinematic masterpiece not only shattered box office records but also shattered the glass ceiling. Gadot’s portrayal of Diana Prince (Wonder Woman’s civilian identity) as a strong, compassionate, and fiercely independent woman became an inspiration to audiences of all ages. However, filming some scenes in the cold was not an easy task, as stated by director Patty Jenkins in The Hollywood Reporter’s Directors Roundtable.

Patty Jenkins Shares Experience of Filming during Cold in Wonder Woman

During The Hollywood Reporter’s Directors Roundtable, Patty Jenkins shared how difficult it was to shoot in such a cold with Gal Gadot in a Wonder Woman costume which was also an important sequence in the film.

So, it was shooting in the middle of the night in the cold with Gal Gadot in a Wonder Woman costume.”

But knowing the importance of the scene, Jenkins despite wanting to go home had to stay back to finish that scene filming. She said:

I don’t wanna be here either, I wanna go home, too. But, I have to be the one that makes this work. Because this is really important to the whole movie and if we don’t do this then all of us will have done all of this other work and it won’t have paid off. So, I have to be the one, you’ve got to go back out there again.”

Patty Jenkin’s Wonder Woman 1984(2020) grossed $169 million worldwide against a production budget of $200 million

Doing it to actors when they’re cold and uncomfortable is very difficult. But, it was a hard scene to get and it was freezing cold and Gal was literally nearly like losing it. She was like shaking and it was like, we gotta go, we gotta do it. (vocalizes) take the coat off and she’s standing there and Chris is tired and I think that was the hardest day just because I really hated doing it to everybody, but it just really mattered. And, I knew if we tried to do pick-ups later it was never going to be the same.”

Patty Jenkins is known for her strong female characters and her ability to tell complex and emotional stories has helmed movies like MonsterWonder Woman, and its sequel Wonder Woman 1984.

Gal Gadot got Hypothermia while Filming Wonder Woman, Yet Finished it with No Complaints

During an interview with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, the Red Notice actress shared how difficult and challenging it was to shoot for Wonder Woman on a cold night with the suit on. It was so tough that she got Hyperthermia while filming one important scene. She said:

So I remember … in the first one, the first one the hardest thing that I was dealing with was the cold. Because we shot outside England during the winter and I was just freezing, like freezing. I remember one night when we shot the scene where we say goodbye, Steve and I was [sic] going through hypothermia. Like, they wrapped me with the silver—like, it was…”

Nevertheless, despite all those odds, she pushed herself to finish the filming with no complaints.

I remember as an actor telling myself, ok, even if it’s cold right now, or even if I’m super uncomfortable right now and my neck is tight and my shoulders hurt, there’s not gonna be like, tiny—in tiny words, it’s gonna say ‘It was a cold day,’ or ‘She threw her neck out,’” Gadot said. “I was like, ‘Ok, I just have to like, forget about everything and forget about the way that I feel and just be the character. That’s something that I kept on thinking about.”

Patty Jenkins’s film received overwhelmingly positive feedback from movie critics and audiences. The movie set numerous box office records and was placed #1 on the list of 50 best superhero movies of all time by Rotten Tomatoes at that time.

Wonder Woman grossed $412.6 million in the United States and Canada and $409.3 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $821.8 million, against an estimated production budget of $120–150 million.
