Chelsea are now working on signing £80m player in same way as they did Enzo Fernandez

Journalist Simon Phillips has claimed that Chelsea are now working on one potential January signing in a similar way to how they did Enzo Fernandez.

He told his Substack that the Blues are doing plenty of groundwork ahead of the chance to sign Ivan Toney when the transfer window opens.

The Blues have been strongly linked with a move for Toney as they look to address their striker woes again.

It looks as if the Englishman is going to push to leave Brentford when he can return to action, which comes midway through the next transfer window.

Phillips has claimed that there has been plenty of work put in by the club for Toney, in a similar way to they did with Fernandez.

He said: “On Toney, my top source says that we have done similar groundwork on signing him as we did with Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, which was actually the thing that tilted those deals in the end, the fact that they both were so keen on coming to Chelsea.

“But as of now, no firm negotiations with Toney’s camp have happened other than regular check-ins, and no contact has been made with Brentford.

“Interestingly though, their director did firmly leave the door open for a January move with some comments yesterday. Personally I still have a gut feeling that we push for him in January, but let’s see.”

If supporters are hopeful that Toney joins, they will be equally as hopeful the saga doesn’t have the same drama that the one to sign the recent World Cup winner had nearly a year ago.

After leaving the negotiation table, the Blues got the deal done with minutes left of the window in dramatic fashion.
