Mbappe Appointed New France Captain
Kylian Mbappe, a forward for Paris Saint-Germain, was announced as the new captain of France by the French football federation (FFF) on Monday. Mbappe will take over as captain from Hugo Lloris.
After conferring with head coach Didier Deschamps, the French sports newspaper L’Equipe announced that Mbappe had agreed to serve as captain of the team.
Didier Deschamps has announced that Kylian Mbappe will take over as captain of the French national team. According to a report from Reuters, the French Football Federation (FFF) announced on Twitter that Antoine Griezmann would serve as the team’s vice captain.
“Kylian is capable of fulfilling all of the duties associated with this responsibility. On the field as well as in the lives of the squad, by being a unifying element,” Deschamps was quoted as saying in an interview that is scheduled to air on Sunday on the French television channel TF1.
Mbappe, who is 24 years old, was ruмored to be one of the candidates for the role ever since goalkeeper Lloris retired from international football in January. Lloris made his decision to end his international career just a few weeks after leading France to a second straight World Cup final, where they were defeated by Argentina in shootouts.
Mbappe has been called up to the France national team 66 times and was an integral part of the team’s victorious run at the 2018 World Cup as well as their runner-up finish in 2022.
On Friday, France will host the Netherlands for their first qualifying match for the Euro 2024 tournament at the Stadium de France. On Monday of the following week, France will travel to Ireland for their second qualifying match.
Leonardo Jardim on Kylian Mbappé as France captain: “He’s been a professional for 7 years”
December 2, 2015, Stade Louis II. Two-minute game. Kylian Mbappé makes his professional debut aged 16 years and 11 months after the AS Monaco-Stade Malherbe de Caen Ligue 1 match. Leonardo Jardim launches Mbappé’s career. Before joining PSG, the Portuguese coach developed this prodigy for a year and a half on the home and European stage.
Since then, Jardim has tracked the Frenchman’s development as a sports icon at 24. On Tuesday, La Parisien notified Jardim by phone that Mbappé would be the next France captain. “I have no doubt that Didier Deschamps, whom I know well, made the right decision,” he said.
Why is this choice sensible?
Captain selection has two perspectives. You either choose the technical leader, who makes the biggest difference on the pitch, or you choose experience. Kylian fits into the second category, but remember that he has been a professional for seven years. He played two World Cup finals and many Champions League matches. He will provide the ultimate maturity.
Did he start in Monaco with this leadership quality, the soul of a captain?
No. He was the dressing room sensation. Playing and performing were his priorities. Matured. His career choices demonstrate his intelligence and composure. After a second season (2016-17), he became a monster. Yet, he planned properly and didn’t omit steps.
Is this armband too much pressure?
I think this increased duty will benefit him. Kylian Mbappé needs fresh challenges to move out of his comfort zone, and this is one. With this armband, he will grow and think differently about how to compromise for the team. Win-win. Because he represents everyone on the field, the captain must prioritize the team. He must always remember that the group’s health affects each player.
As we often hear, can an attacker’s position or selfish focus on the goal make it harder to consider collectively?
I disagree. Strikers must score and assist. When Kylian started, we talked about it. I told him “you need statistics, it’s essential.” I think he can balance personal aspirations with group goals. He will have teammates to handle this. Captains are never alone. Kylian must now adjust. Close to the coach and the main messenger, but always a footballer.
How much did his World Cup final hat-trick against Argentina matter?
He allowed two sҺots to get his team back in the cup race in this encounter. It matters. His drive and determination allow him to carry his teammates.
On March 11, his overture toward Brest drew criticism. Is his morality a concern?
Everyone has embarrassing moments. Match pressure, club context… I have 50,000 examples, even in France, of players going through terrible moments.
