Kylian Mbappe broke his nose in a terrible collision on the field, forcing him to have surgery and face the risk of missing all remaining matches in Euro 2024 with the French team.

Kylian Mbappe was forced to leave the field in the opening match of Euro 2024, which France won 1-0 against Austria after an own goal early this morning, June 18. Mbappe suffered a serious injury to his nose while trying to head in at the end of the match. He was replaced in the 90th minute.

French medical staff came to take care of Mbappe, and Mbappe’s white shirt was quickly stained red by blood. After being taken off the field, Mbappe returned to the field and was then given a yellow card by the referee for delaying the match. In the end, he was replaced by Olivier Giroud and France won 1-0 against Austria. ITV commentator Sam Matterface said: “Kylian Mbappe has a broken nose”.

Matt Upson shared as co-commentator for BBC Radio 5 Live: “Kylian Mbappe returned to the field without permission, the referee will penalize him and that is right. You can not do it! Was he advised to return? He just held his nose and sat down on the field. It seems like his nose was seriously injured.”

Talking about the decision that Mbappe broke his nose but still returned to the field and then had to sit down again, causing the match to be paused and Mbappe to receive a yellow card, Roy Keane said on ITV: “He got injured, it’s annoying. It’s clear that he came back to the field just to stop the match. He continued to sit on the field. I don’t like to see this, this wouldn’t be right if he was asked to come back by the coach.”

It was later confirmed that Mbappe, who suffered a broken nose, went to a hospital in Dusseldorf for nose surgery. Doctors think Kylian Mbappe could be sidelined for at least 10 days after surgery on a broken nose and possibly even longer, putting his Euro 2024 campaign in serious doubt.

Former French team doctor Fabrice Bryand told L’Equipe (France) newspaper that the minimum time frame for Mbappe to recover is 10 days, meaning that French team captain Mbappe will at least not play 2 matches. The remaining matches are in the group stage. The French Football Federation confirmed on Monday night that Mbappe left the stadium in an ambulance, undergoing surgery at Dusseldorf University Hospital.

After the match, coach Didier Deschamps of the French team said: “Kylian Mbappe is not good. He is with medical staff. His nose was hit hard, that’s for sure. We need to test it, but it seems quite complicated. That is very unfortunate for us tonight.”

When asked when Kylian Mbappe could return, coach Didier Deschamps added: “I don’t have the information at hand, the medical staff is checking Kylian Mbappe. And at this stage, I cannot answer. I do not know. That’s the black mark of tonight.”

Meanwhile, Mbappe himself was very optimistic and joked on social networks. Mbappe wrote: “Any ideas about wearing a mask?”.

Mbappe’s night may have ended in pain, but he was key in setting up France’s only goal of the night. Mbappe, who left Paris Saint-Germain to join Real Madrid this summer, sent in a cross that Austria’s Max Wober inexplicably headed into his own net in the first half.
