LeBron James found himself at the center of a viral moment during Team USA’s quarterfinal victory over Brazil at the Paris Olympics.

The incident occurred when James reacted to a wave of cheers from the crowd at Bercy Arena, seemingly believing the applause was directed at him.

As the United States dominated with a 32-point lead, James, seated on the bench, waved to the audience and performed his signature gesture, pretending to place a crown on his head, a nod to his “King James” persona. However, the enthusiastic reception from the crowd wasn’t meant for him.

James was mistaken over crowd’s support

According to reports from Larry Brown Sports, the applause was actually intended for French swimmer Leon Marchand.

The 22-year-old athlete, who has become a national hero after winning four gold medals and one silver, was being celebrated by the audience.

Marchand, who was in attendance, stood up to acknowledge the crowd’s ovation, further fueling the confusion.

James’ reaction likely stemmed from being shown on the Jumbotron, which might have led him to assume the cheers were for him.

Meanwhile, Marchand, seen conversing with two companions, was the true recipient of the warm reception from the French fans.

This amusing mix-up became a talking point on social media, highlighting the unexpected crossover of two sports stars during the Olympic Games.

While James’ playful response added a light-hearted moment to the game, it was Marchand who ultimately took center stage in the eyes of the Parisian crowd.
