Dodgers’ Ohtani receives his first hit after injury, and the Yankees avoid sweeping

Shohei Ohtani picked up his first hit since injuring his shoulder, but his Los Angeles Dodgers lost to the New York Yankees 11-4 in Game 4 of the World Series on Tuesday.

The Yankees cut the Dodgers’ series lead to 3-1 behind a third-inning grand slam by Anthony Volpe at Yankee Stadium.

Ohtani, who suffered a left shoulder subluxation when he was caught stealing in Game 2, singled to center in the fifth and went 1-for-4.

In his other at-bats, the Japanese slugger popped out, flied out and struck out, leaving him with a .133 average (2-for-15) and no RBI in four games so far in the series.

Yankees shortstop Volpe’s grand slam to left turned a 2-1 deficit into a 5-2 lead.

Austin Wells and Gleyber Torres also homered for the Yankees, whose most feared hitter Aaron Judge finally recorded his first RBI of the series.

The Yankees broke open the game with a five-run eighth that included Torres’ three-run homer and Judge’s run-scoring single.

The Dodgers looked on course to sweep the series when they took a quick 2-0 lead in the first on Freddie Freeman’s two-run home run, silencing the Yankees faithful.

Freeman became the first player in history to homer in six consecutive World Series games, dating back to his trip to the Fall Classic with the Atlanta Braves in 2021.

“We’re still in a pretty good spot and we feel good,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “We’ll be ready to go tomorrow.”
