Anne Hathaway reveals director Christopher Nolan doesn’t allow chairs on his sets because ‘if they’re sitting they’re not working’

Anne Hathaway revealed in a new interview that filmmaker Christopher Nolan doesn’t allow any chairs on his film sets.

The 37-year-old actress, who has worked with the director on 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises and 2014’s Interstellar, revealed the tidbit in a new ‘Actors on Actors’ interview with her Les Miserables co-star Hugh Jackman for Variety.

Jackman, 51, was talking about the two directors he’s worked with who don’t allow cell phones on set (Darren Aronofsky and Denis Villeneuve), when Hathaway mentioned it’s actually three, since Nolan doesn’t allow phones either, and he starred in his 2006 thriller The Prestige, before adding Nolan doesn’t allow chairs either.

‘Chris also doesn’t allow chairs. I worked with him twice. He doesn’t allow chairs, and his reasoning is, if you have chairs, people will sit, and if they’re sitting, they’re not working,’ Hathaway said.

Hathaway admitted that Nolan makes, ‘incredible movies in terms of scope and ambition and technical prowess and emotion’ adding the director’s chair ban may speak to how efficient he is as a filmmaker.

‘It always arrives at the end under schedule and under budget. I think he’s onto something with the chair thing,’ Hathaway said.

The actress added that she is, ‘such a director nerd,’ and that she loves, ‘seeking out the best directors I can and then just watching them.’

‘Chris’ whole approach to filmmaking is one of my favorite ones. He’s broken it down to its most minimal, but also his movies are just so huge and ornate,’ she added.

‘That combination of really being intentional about what it was that we were doing — and also, he’s just so inspiring,’ Hathaway said.
