The 2025 Dubai Desert Classic, which was Rory McIlroy’s first tournament of the year, ended after Round 4 on January 19th. While McIlroy was initially in the mix to win the tournament, a bad showing in the last two holes of the final round led to him finishing T4.
While the Irishman managed a top 5 finish to kick off the 2025 season, he spoke about the one thing he needs to fix if he wants to win tournaments this season. In a press conference after the Dubai Desert Classic, he was asked to share his thoughts about his swing.
Rory McIlroy said:
“Probably just a little bit of game management. I think when you take a few weeks off and you come back to play like a really good tournament setup like this, I look at some flags on greens and like, whoa, that’s quite a bit further to the right than I thought it would be or that’s quite a bit further to the left.
“When you’re playing at home and the greens are in the middle of the greens, it just gives you a different visual. Then you get out here, and your aim lines start to become a little different. So. I think playing a week like this, it sort of gives me a good appreciation for what I need to do the next few weeks.”
While Rory McIlroy finished T4 at the Dubai Desert Classic, the tournament was won by LIV Golf professional Tyrrell Hatton. However, it’s worth noting that McIlroy has won the Dubai Desert Classic more times than any other golfer. He won this tournament in 2009, 2015, 2023 and 2024.
