Just as the Genesis GV80 saved the life of golf hero Tiger Woods, Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 has garnered attention in the U.S. for safely protecting 18-month-old twins in a major traffic accident.
The protagonist, named Shane Barrett, recently shared his personal experience of the car accident on social media. He revealed in his post, “We were in a serious accident, but the Ioniq 5 did its job by safely protecting my family, especially the 18-month-old twins who were sitting in the back seat.”
The essence of the story is that although a pickup truck struck the Ioniq 5 at high speed, all family members aboard suffered only minor abrasions, with no serious injuries.
He explained, “I was stationary to make a left turn on a road at 88 km/h (55 mph) when the car behind me collided without reducing its speed.” He added, “The police did not find any skid marks at the scene, and while we cannot know how fast that car was going, it was likely faster than 96 km/h (60 mph).”
The photos he shared with his post show the Ioniq 5 with its rear damaged due to the accident and the pickup truck involved. Despite the significant crumpling and damage to the rear bumper and trunk from the impact, the passenger compartment and the car seat installed in the back seat remained intact.
The Ioniq 5, equipped with the Hyundai Motor Group’s dedicated electric vehicle platform E-GMP, intentionally deforms its rear member in a rear-end collision to absorb impact while reinforcing the lower member with hot-stamping steel to prevent deformation of the safety zone and battery damage.
Additionally, the design utilizes the battery pack as a structural element to increase body rigidity. By placing aluminum extrusions inside the side sill, located outside the battery, the design disperses impact during side collisions via the lower frame and battery case, ensuring safety.

Moreover, to effectively disperse impact energy generated during a frontal collision, the load paths have been optimized. Considering scenarios like small overlap collisions where impact energy concentrates on part of the front, a double box member design completes the multi-skeletal structure. The safety performance of the Ioniq 5 was recognized at the highest level after receiving the ‘Top Safety Pick+’ (TSP+) rating in crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in March.
Shane Barrett, who protected his family with the Ioniq 5, expressed gratitude for the miraculous safety of the 18-month-old twins, concluding his post with, “I might buy another Ioniq again.”
The vehicle safety of Hyundai Motor Group has been proven through instances of protecting passengers in unforeseen accidents.
In 2021, golf player Tiger Woods suffered a leg injury in an accident while driving a Genesis GV80, which was provided as an event vehicle for the Genesis Invitational golf tournament. The police investigating the scene reported that while the front and bumper of the vehicle were completely destroyed, the interior was largely unharmed.
Also, in December 2022, a couple in a Hyundai Avante N fell 91 meters in a canyon in the U.S. but reportedly did not suffer serious injuries, as noted on social media and local news. In May of the same year, Czech ice hockey player Jaromir Jagr was involved in an accident while driving an EV6 that collided with a tram, yet he exited the vehicle with only minor injuries to one hand, leaving bystanders surprised.
