In his film Superman Legacy, James Gunn analyzes Clark vs. Superman

With so many characters taking part in Superman: Legacy, director James Gunn elaborates on how the movie will balance Clark Kent’s dual identity life.

James Gunn is breaking down why there will be a variety of characters in Clark Kent’s life in Superman: Legacy. As the DCEU is coming to an end in 2023, a new DC Universe is on the horizon, with DC Studios actively working on several TV shows and movies that will be part of a fresh interconnected franchise. Superman: Legacy will be the true beginning of the DC Universe, with Gunn set to direct the highly anticipated reboot. Filming is currently expected to begin in early 2024 as Superman: Legacy is in pre-production.

Recently, Gunn added not one but four new cast members for Superman: Legacy, including a new Green Lantern who will be played by Nathan Fillion. However, Gunn has been elaborating more on how all of these additional characters will balance Clark’s life out.

Over on Threads, Gunn conversed with a user named @GPSeeWald2001 about why there are a number of superheroes in Superman: Legacy. For Gunn, they “are entering a world where superheroes exist and have existed for quite a while,” which reflects one side of the Man of Steel’s life.

On Instagram, @Ginger_Dude1 was a bit more critical after Anthony Carrigan was cast as Metamorpho in Superman: Legacy. However, Gunn stressed how “Superman is a man of two worlds,” reflecting on how people like Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, and Perry White differ from the superheroes that Clark engages with in his career.

Everything James Gunn Has Revealed About Superman: Legacy’s Story

Ever since Gunn revealed that he is working on Superman: Legacy, he has been very vocal about this not being another origin story for Krypton’s last son. Instead, they will be following Clark being in his early days as Superman while still working out the ups and downs of being a Daily Planet reporter. That is one of the reasons why they cast a younger actor as the DC icon without having to retell how Clark became Superman.

With Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, and Metamorpho already existing in the DC Universe, Superman: Legacy will be taking audience members into a DC Universe that has perhaps already has a Justice League team established. Gunn has even made it crystal clear that having more heroes in Superman: Legacy is specifically to help tell Clark’s story better. That alone makes their presence nothing more than supporting roles, which is the right direction for Superman: Legacy as this is a film about him rather than setting up numerous spinoffs.

Hopefully, the next characters who will be cast for Superman: Legacy will be specifically players who are from Superman lore. With Jimmy Olsen already confirmed and Lex Luthor being rumored to appear, there will be plenty of relevant Superman characters to look forward to in the reboot. But for now, the world will have to wait and see who else gets cast in Superman: Legacy next.
