Manchester United’s final weeks of the transfer window could centre around them trying to get players off the books with several fringe players on the cusp of leaving, Harry Maguire among them
Manchester United have spent over £150m this summer but are far from done in the transfer window.
Erik ten Hag has landed a number of key targets which have addressed problem positions but another new midfielder could still be on the cards. Alongside that though a number of players are expected to leave Old Trafford with Ten Hag deeming them surplus to requirements.
The Dutchman found several settled partnerships in defence and midfield last term with those combinations set to continue heading into the new season, which leaves several men on the periphery of the first-team. Here’s the latest from the red half of Manchester.
Quartet set for exits
Ten Hag is ready to green-light the departures of four Manchester United players in an attempt to raise funds for new arrivals.
The Dutchman said last weekend he was happy with his squad, but he could be tempted to dip back into the transfer market. But the former Ajax boss would have to sell first, with several players staring at the Old Trafford exit door after falling down the pecking order.
Fred is the latest to be heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford. The 30-year-old made just 11 Premier League starts last season and Mount’s arrival, alongside Christian Eriksen’s return to full fitness, should only decrease Fred’s game time. Harry Maguire, Donny van de Beek and Scott McTominay are also likely to be sold by the Red Devils.

Maguire replacements eyed
With Maguire seemingly heading towards the exit door at Old Trafford, United are looking to ensure they are well-stocked defensively.
According to the Daily Star talks have started with Bayern Munich over a move for Benjamin Pavard, with the player keen on the switch. The Frenchman, who won the World Cup back in 2018, has fallen out of favour at the Allianz Arena.
United are considering a number of possible replacements, who will compete with the likes of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez, with Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo also on that shortlist.
Cottagers back in for Fred
Fulham are ready to reignite their interest in Fred, who was linked with a Manchester exit earlier this summer.
The Brazilian and Cottagers boss Marco Silva were seen in dialogue after the final game of last season. The Daily Mail understands that the west Londoners, who looked to have cooled their interest, are now ready to renew attempts to land Fred.
United value the midfielder at around £20m and offloading him could yet fund a move for Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat. Ten Hag is still looking to bolster his ranks in the middle of the park.
