Bill Simmons thinks The Minnesota Timberwolves could be an ideal destination for Damian Lillard.
The Damian Lillard trade could happen sometime this season, but it doesn’t look like the Miami Heat can be the only team in that race. Bill Simmons has suggested that the Minnesota Timberwolves join the race and become bonafide contenders in the West by pairing Lillard up with Anthony Edwards and Rudy Gobert.
“You wonder if Dame is watching [Minnesota] going ‘You know what? Me for Towns. Just switch us. We have Gobert. We have Edwards. It’s kinda nice. Me and Ant together. Maybe that’s a better situation for me than anywhere else. F*ck it, I’m adding [Minnesota] to the list”
Karl-Anthony Towns likely gets moved in that trade, either to the Blazers directly or to some other team that will send the Blazers assets. Given KAT’s questionable value with his injury history and massive contract, the Wolves may end up giving talented young assets like Jaden McDaniels to make a Lillard trade happen.
Would Damian Lillard Consider A Trade To The Wolves?
Dame going to the Wolves would be a safe legacy option, as he isn’t going to a team that’s coming off a Finals run like the Heat. If the Wolves end up succeeding after acquiring Dame, the credit will go to the superstar point guard.
Edwards could blossom with a PG like Lillard next to him and live up to the MVP potential people are claiming he has. The prospect of forming a dynamic backcourt with Ant and having Gobert marshall the paint without having to share the spot with KAT could give this team some really good balance.
Hopefully, they could keep Jaden McDaniels in a Lillard trade and make themselves one of the four best teams in the West.
It’s clear Lillard not only wants to go to a winning situation but also to a big market. He’s wasted over a decade playing in a small-market franchise like Portland that couldn’t put a winning roster around him. It’s time he kicks back and goes to Miami where there’ll never be a shortage of star players wanting to come.
