Mason Mount chose to swap Chelsea for Manchester United in one of the summer’s most controversial transfers but John Terry believes there is more to the storyline
John Terry believes there’s “another side to the story” of how and why Mason Mount chose to leave Chelsea for Manchester United.
The midfielder, who has risen through the ranks at Cobham, opted not to renew his deal with the Blues and moved to a direct rival in the Red Devils. United spent £60m to add the versatile midfielder, who will take on his former club for the first time in early December.
Chelsea were involved in dialogue with Mount for months as they looked to agree on a new contract. The two parties were at loggerheads however and the England international decided against working with Mauricio Pochettino and instead headed to Old Trafford – but Terry reckons more happened than people know.
He told Knockout Events: “Mase is proper Chels through and through. There’s always two sides to a story and I know the other side to it. I’m not going to air that tonight but there’s another side to the story. Let’s not be too harsh on him when he comes back.”
Mount made his United debut on the opening weekend against Wolves having previously scored for the Blues against the Red Devils. He’d been a regular under several managers, including Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel, helping the club win the Champions League.
He issued a farewell video to the Chelsea fans in which he made it known that the switch was right for his career. Mount said: “Given the speculation over the last six months, this may not come as a surprise to you. But it doesn’t make it any easier to tell you that I’ve made the decision to leave Chelsea. I feel you deserve more than just a written statement.

“So I wanted to tell you directly how grateful I’ve been for all of your support over the last 18 years. I know some of you won’t be happy with my decision, but it’s what’s right for me at this moment in my career.”
Mount claimed, through conversations with those at Stamford Bridge, that he wasn’t part of the picture under Pochettino, despite many believing the Argentine would relish working with him, and immediately had his mind made up once he knew of United’s interest.
He told MUTV: “Several months ago, it became clear I wasn’t in Chelsea’s plans going forward and once I knew United were involved my decision was made up. Massive club, with huge iconic players that have played here and I wanted to be part of that from the beginning. Getting here early ready for pre-season to start was a main objective of mine as well.”
