How Kansas City Chiefs player Patrick Mahomes earned his fortune: from his historic US$450 million contract to endorsements with Oakley and Adidas to, more recently, Kim Kardashian’s Skims

Patrick Mahomes might be the best NFL player today, with two Super Bowls and multiple MVP awards under his belt, plus the biggest team contract ever – all before turning 30

He spends his brand deal earnings, which are second only to Tom Brady’s, on golf, Formula One events, and his wife Brittany and kids Sterling Skye and Patrick ‘Bronze’ Lavon III

Patrick Mahomes is arguably the best player in the NFL – and now he can add Skims ambassador to his impressive resume.

Mahomes, his wife Brittany, daughter Sterling Skye and son Patrick “Bronze” Lavon III broke the internet with their adorable photos showing off Skims’ Cozy line, which debuted on November 9.

The superstar Kansas City Chiefs quarterback has won two Super Bowls, two MVP awards and two Super Bowl MVPs in his career – all before turning 30.

And he’s making a not-so-small fortune as a result, with his net worth reportedly being US$70 million. Mahomes signed the biggest deal in NFL history in 2020, and he’s since restructured the deal to earn even more money over a shorter span, per NFL.com.

Here’s how he makes and spends his millions.

The Kansas City Chiefs drafted Mahomes out of Texas Tech with the 10th overall pick at the 2017 NFL Draft. After spending his rookie year backing up veteran Alex Smith, Mahomes took over the starting job in Kansas City in his second season – and was an immediate sensation. He was named MVP of the 2018 season before leading his team to a Super Bowl victory the very next year.

In 2020, Kansas City committed to Mahomes with the biggest contract in NFL history. A 10-year, US$450 million extension ensured that Mahomes would stay in Kansas City for some time.

And he got to work right away, winning another Super Bowl – and Super Bowl MVP – at the end of the 2022 season.

A few months after winning his second Super Bowl, he renegotiated the deal to get even more money in a shorter span.

Various brand endorsements

With an average annual value of US$45 million and several impressive endorsement deals, Mahomes has plenty of money to spend.

In addition to the money he makes on the field, Mahomes also has several impressive endorsement deals with high-profile brands.

According to Forbes, Mahomes made US$20 million in sponsorship deals in 2023, second only to Tom Brady among NFL athletes.Patrick Mahomes showing off a mint Boss suit with matching Oakley sunglasses. Photo: @patrickmahomes/Instagram

Mahomes has featured regularly in commercials for State Farm insurance. He has also lined up across from Troy Polamalu while promoting Head and Shoulders.

He has a deal with Bose, promoting their headphones both in TV commercials and on Instagram. Essentia water sponsors his hydration.

He has a big partnership with Adidas, which includes his own line of shoes. Mahomes is also an ambassador for Oakley sunglasses, often pictured in a dramatic pair of shades.

Investments in sports teams, F&B and tech

With all of his earnings both on and off the field, Mahomes has developed quite the investment portfolio. He bought a slice of MLB’s Kansas City Royals, furthering his commitment to his adopted city.

His wife, Brittany Matthews, also bought a share of the city’s National Women’s Soccer League team, the Kansas City Current. In January, Mahomes joined his wife as a part-owner of the Kansas City Current. Mahomes also has a stake in Kansas City’s MLS team, Sporting KC.

Outside of sports, Mahomes has also invested in the restaurant industry. A native Texan, Mahomes worked with a franchise group to help bring Whataburger to the greater Kansas City area. His preferred meal is “the No 1 with cheese, ketchup and pickles only with a large fry and a large Coke”, though he mixes his order up.

He also invested in Whoop, a wearable tech company that includes Kevin Durant, Rory McIlroy, and Justin Thomas as fellow investors.

Mahomes spends his millions on golf, and watching Formula One

But Mahomes doesn’t put all of his money to work, as he knows how to have a good time as well. He enjoyed some fun in the sun at Formula One’s Miami Grand Prix.

Mahomes is also an avid golfer, having teed it up alongside fellow sports superstar Stephen Curry. He was even featured in an iteration of The Match, teaming up with Josh Allen to face off against Aaron Rodgers and Brady to raise money for charity. And he has his very own par-three hole in the backyard of his sprawling Kansas City palace.

And they had their first 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥 together – Sterling Skye – the year prior.

The Mahomes family continues to grow, with Patrick and Brittany welcoming their second 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥, Patrick “Bronze” Lavon III, in November 2022.

With plenty of time – and money – left on his deal with the Kansas City Chiefs, life for Mahomes is definitely looking good.
