Dunk is defined by his strong sense of justice, and he constantly strives to live up to the ideals of knighthood, even in the face of moral dilemmas and personal risk. In Martin’s first novella, The Hedge Knight, which the first season of the show will adapt, Dunk defends a puppeteer named Tanselle at the Ashford Tournament after she is attacked by the cruel Prince Aerion Targaryen. Ultimately, Dunk fights in a Trial of Seven to defend Tanselle’s honor and the lives of others.
Throughout the Dunk and Egg novellas, which future seasons of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will adapt, Dunk performs numerous heroic deeds, often putting himself at great risk to protect others.
