Sources close to the company said that X.AI’s artificial intelligence projects will serve companies owned by Elon Musk such as Twitter, Tesla, Neuralink or SpaceX… X.AI is considered the starting step for Elon Musk’s plan to turn Twitter into a super app, in which Twitter will not only be a simple social network as it is today but will also integrate many other features such as e-commerce, online payment, taxi booking… Elon Musk has also invited Igor Babushkin, a leading expert in artificial intelligence and who used to work at DeepMind (Google’s artificial intelligence project), to head the development team of X.AI.
In late March 2023, the 51-year-old billionaire signed a letter calling on global companies and organizations to pause the race in artificial intelligence (AI) technology for six months to work together to build a common set of rules on AI.
However, according to Business Insider, he has also purchased 10,000 Nvidia graphics cards (GPUs) to train AI and this project is in its early stages.
Tech giants like Google, Meta, and Microsoft have spent years researching AI systems to serve translation, search, and targeted advertising. AI’s appeal has increased since late 2022 when OpenAI launched ChatGPT, a chatbot that can generate text based on user requests in natural language.
Elon Musk also co-founded OpenAI in 2015 with a number of famous figures such as Sam Altman, Reid Hoffman, Peter Theil. Initially, this was a non-profit organization, focusing on developing AI to counter Google because they believed that the technology giant did not pay enough attention to the safety of AI.
By February 2018, Elon Musk was the company’s chairman. In 2020, he expressed his displeasure when OpenAI granted Microsoft an exclusive license to exploit GPT-3. Meanwhile, Microsoft has invested billions of dollars in this startup and integrated many of OpenAI’s technologies into its Bing search service.
