“The Boondocks” is an American anime-influenced adult animated sitcom created by Aaron McGruder for Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim.
Based on McGruder’s comic ᵴtriƥ, it premiered on November 6, 2005, and follows the Freeman family in the predominantly white suburb of Woodcrest, exploring cultural and racial themes.
The show aired 55 episodes over four seasons, ending on June 23, 2014. McGruder did not participate in the final season. The series has received several accolades, including an NAACP Image Award and a Peabody Award. A planned reboot by Sony Pictures Animation was announced in 2019 but was canceled in 2022.Initially a comic ᵴtriƥ on Hitlist.com, “The Boondocks” later appeared in The Source magazine and newspapers starting in April 1999. A TV pilot created with Reginald Hudlin for Fox was rejected, but Adult Swim eventually picked up the show. The series features a theme song by hip-hop artist Asheru and transitioned to high-definition in its third season.
