Anne Hathaway talks about the difficult time when many directors and producers avoided her and did not dare to invite her to act in movies.
Recently, Anne Hathaway appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine. In the interview, the “Princess Diaries” star said that when she first started her acting career in Hollywood, she faced difficulties when many directors and producers avoided her and did not dare to invite her to act in movies.
She said: “Many people refused to invite me to act in movies because my reputation online at that time was very negative. That humiliation was hard to swallow. The important thing is that you do not let those things get close to your life. You have to keep your courage.
That was very difficult because I told myself that if I chose the safe option, kept the peace, and hid myself so as not to attract too much attention, I would feel less pain. But if you choose that way, you cannot be an actress. You have to be like a tightrope walker, a daredevil.”
On screen, Anne Hathaway attracts the audience’s eyes with her fragile and charming beauty – from Princess Mia of The Princess Diaries (2001), Seline/Catwoman of The Dark Knight Rises (2012) to Fantine of Les Misérables (2012)… Anne Hathaway has also been the center of conflicts behind the scenes.
The anti-Anne Hathaway movement exploded on social media under the name “Hathahaters”. Many colleagues in Hollywood commented that the female star, who has long been known in the industry as a “fake, dramatic person”.
Along with her success at the 2013 Oscars, Anne Hathaway also became the focus of rejection from the general audience. The boycott wave was so strong that the New York Times wrote about it in a cultural research article published in April 2013 titled Do We Really Hate Anne Hathaway?.
The article listed many manifestations of boycotting Anne Hathaway online, as well as tried to dig deeper and analyze the reasons behind this negative chain of reactions.
Another reason why Anne was hated was her dress. At the last minute, the actress decided to swap the princess dress that her longtime friend Valentino Garavani had bought her for a plain Prada dress. For one simple reason: Anne didn’t want to look like any other girl on the red carpet, specifically because the actress discovered that her colleague Amanda was going to wear a similar design.
Anne Hathaway also revealed that director Christopher Nolan – who had just won a big Oscar award in early March – had saved her career at that time. “He was like an angel, he didn’t care about those criticisms and gave me one of the best roles of my career. I really don’t know if Nolan was intentionally supporting me. But that action had that effect. And my career could have been ruined without that help.”
Anne Hathaway worked with Christopher Nolan in The Dark Knight Rises.
