The long-awaited 28 Years Later is set to bring Danny Boyle’s acclaimed zombie franchise back to life.

Filming will begin in the UK soon, with Alex Garland returning to pen the script, marking his first writing contribution to the series since 28 Days Later. Boyle is helming the project, which stars Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes. This installment also kicks off a planned trilogy, with the second film, tentatively titled 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple, already in development.

The story is set in a world still grappling with the Rage virus 28 years after the initial outbreak. Fiennes, who plays a compassionate doctor, described the plot as centering on a young boy navigating a post-apocalyptic northern England in search of help for his ailing mother. The narrative is set against a hauntingly desolate landscape filled with infected dangers lurking in forests and hills.

While details about other characters are still under wraps, speculation is rife about Cillian Murphy’s potential return as Jim, the protagonist of the original film. Murphy, who now serves as an executive producer, has expressed enthusiasm about reprising his role if the opportunity arises.
