Like many of today’s top NBA players, LeBron James grew up idolizing the great Michael Jordan. Despite having earned his place among the game’s elite and often being compared to “His Airness” in the GOAT discussion, LeBron has always longed for a unique opportunity to learn directly from Jordan himself.
Reflecting on his admiration for the Chicago Bulls icon, Bron once divulged that he would have liked to ask MJ several questions. Unsurprisingly, James is particularly interested in understanding Jordan’s perspective on his playing style and overall attributes as a player.
“I mean, I don’t know. That’s a trick question. I do. I do at times,” the superstar forward told ESPN’s Chris Broussard in 2013 when asked if he wished he had more of a relationship with Mike. “You know, he’s somebody who I looked up to, and I’ve never had a conversation with him about the game.”
“I would love to sit down with him and just know exactly what he was going through and know what was his mind frame throughout all his special years. Throughout his pains — you know, not being able to get past Detroit, then overcoming Detroit. Or asking him, ‘Why did you retire? What made you come back? What made you come back again?’ You know, everything that we all think we know. Just kind of having a sit-down conversation. And then also to hear him talk about me. I would like to know what he thinks about my game and ways I can get better,” he added.
MJ and Bron share a mutual respect
While James and Jordan might not share a close friendship, their relationship is marked by a profound mutual respect that transcends the basketball court. Even though Bron and MJ are two different athletes, they naturally found it easy to acknowledge each other’s greatness because of their similarities.
Both legendary NBA figures have made significant contributions to the game and inspired countless fans and players around the world. Their competitive spirits have propelled them to the zenith of success, which is why they are considered by many to be two of the greatest players the NBA has ever seen.
Intertwined legacies
Despite the difference in playing styles and eras they played in, James and Jordan recognize each other’s career achievements and legacies. This respect extends beyond the game itself, as both athletes have also demonstrated admirable leadership and dedication in their communities.
What LeBron and Michael have for one another can neither be tagged as friendship nor acquaintance but it showcases the spirit of sportsmanship and the bond that forms among those who strive for excellence in their craft.
James and MJ may never become close pals—like Mike and Kobe Bryant, for example—but their lives and basketball legacies will forever be intertwined.
