Tiger Woods new TGL golf event TV ratings announced after costing $50 million to set up

TIGER WOODS’ new golf event enjoyed a ratings boost after the legend made his first appearance in the competition.

The new indoor golf league, which was co-founded by Woods and Rory McIlroy after costing $50million to set up, kicked off last week.

Tiger Woods made his first appearance in the TGLAP

The debut match drew in an audience of 919,000 viewers.

But one million people tuned in for the second TGL match on Tuesday, which featured Woods .

Woods featured for a team he co-owns, Jupiter Links Golf Club, who were beaten 12-1 by Los Angeles Golf Club.

TGL matches play all 15 holes for season-ending tiebreaker purposes, even when the match outcome has been decided, with the second match overunning its allotted time slot on ESPN.

Woods said post-game: “Hopefully people tuned in for the entire broadcast.”

Ryder Cup star Max Homa also featured for Woods’ team in front of a sold-out SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Floria – a 1,500 seater venue.

Woods added: “It’s about entertaining. We had a laugh.

“This is unique. This is something that golf has never seen before—to have an arena like this.”

The TGL consists of six teams boasting four players each.

Matches last two hours and pit three players from each time against each other.

The six teams have some notable backers including Serena and Venus Williams and Stephen Curry , who co-own Los Angeles Golf Club and The Bay Golf Club respectively.

The other three teams are New York Golf Club, Atlanta Drive GC, and Boston Common Golf, who are owned by Fenway Sports Group.

There are some big stars competing to win the inaugural event, including US Ryder Cup stars Patrick Cantlay , Justin Thomas , Colin Morikawa, Xavier Schauffele and Wyndham Clark .

McIlroy also features for Boston Common Golf while his Ryder Cup Team Europe pals Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose represent Los Angeles Golf Club.

Fellow Team Europe stars Ludwig Aberg and Shane Lowry play for The Bay Golf Club while Matt Fitzpatrick if part of New York Golf Club.

Woods’ debut did not go to plan as an approach shot on the second hole soared 101 yards over the green and into water, leaving the crowd gasping in shock.

Tiger glared down glumly at the ground for a few seconds as son Charlie grinned widely.

He also opened his hand out in front of him, laughing and appearing to point at his dad.

At least Tiger was eventually able to see the funny side… albeit at the expense of a team-mate.

Kevin Kisner was attempting to get out of a bunker on the penultimate hole in his singles match against Morikawa.

But the 40-year-old from Carolina caught his shot too low on the club and pinged it straight into the flagstick.

Far from consoling their colleague, Woods and Homa led the guffawing.

In fact, Tiger doubled over in hysterics and 34-year-old Homa bent over as if in fear when the ball ricocheted away.
