The One Thing Wife Brittany Tells Patrick Mahomes Before Games

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback credits his partner for fueling his success, he told reporters ahead of Super Bowl LIX.

Ahead of Super Bowl LIX, and as the sports world debates whether Patrick Mahomes is the greatest of all time, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback is hailing his wife, Brittany, as the “competitor in the family.”

“She’s more competitive than I am and so when I’m calm and and I’m trying to figure out what I’m going to do and try to make sure my mind’s right she’s always telling me that she’s ready to compete as much as I am,” Mahomes, 29, told reporters, including PEOPLE, about his wife’s one message to him ahead of games during a press conference leading up to Sunday’s championship.

Not only that, but the mother of three — and former college soccer player — is fueling her husband’s drive as well as their family’s bond, he said.

“I think having that fire, it bleeds through our entire family and it makes us as a family so close-knit because Brittany’s going out there and being the one that’s willing to lay it on the line every single day, and so she’s, like I said, she’s the competitor in the family,” he said. “People think I am, but she is for sure.”

At the University of Texas at Tyler, Brittany, 29, set program records while playing Division III soccer.

In 2016, she became the first athlete in school history to score three hat-tricks in both a season and a career, and during her senior season, she finished with 40 points and 18 goals — single-season records at the East Texas school.

She went on to play professionally in Iceland before reuniting with her high school sweetheart in Kansas City. Brittany and Patrick eventually got married in 2022.

Last month, six days after welcoming their third 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥, Golden Raye Mahomes, Brittany returned to Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City — dressed in a game-day outfit — as Patrick and the Chiefs hosted the Houston Texans for the divisional playoff game on Saturday, Jan. 18.

Brittany also didn’t miss her pre-game tradition of wishing her husband well on the field before kickoff.

Last year, after the Chiefs won the 2024 Super Bowl over the San Francisco 49ers in overtime, she summed up her support of the signal-caller.

“This season was a special one!” Brittany began in a post on Instagram. “This guy never stopped believing in his team…through the ups and downs and all the doubters, never once did he doubt this team.”

“He is a true leader and a team player. He continued to ask himself what he could do better to lead this team to the Super Bowl,” she added. “I saw so much behind the scenes that I will forever be in awe of you as a person and a football player! You my guy deserved this!!! I love you and am always and forever proud of you ❤️.”
