Young Nigerian man who begged for money to sponsor his flight ticket after winning scholarship to US finally graduates, appreciates supporters

A determined young Nigerian man named Godwin Smart, has graduated with a Master’s degree in Physics from North Carolina University, overcoming financial challenges that almost hindered his academic pursuit.

Godwin’s journey to the United States was filled with obstacles. After earning a First-Class degree in Physics from Tai Solarin University, he was awarded a fully funded scholarship to pursue his Master’s degree in the U.S.

However, despite securing the scholarship, he lacked the money to buy a flight ticket to commence his studies. Determined not to let this opportunity slip away, Godwin turned to social media, sharing his story and seeking financial assistance from Nigerians.

Moved by his resilience and determination, Nigerians rallied behind him, contributing funds that enabled him to purchase his ticket just days before his program commenced.

Now, Godwin has officially graduated, and he is overwhelmed with gratitude. “I am beyond excited and deeply grateful for this moment. It’s a dream come true, and as I reflect on the journey, I can’t help but feel overwhelmed by God’s faithfulness,” he shared in an interview,

He dedicated his achievement to the sacrifices and unwavering support of his late mother, who ignited his passion for education.

Godwin recalled how his mother, despite their financial struggles, borrowed money from their church to pay for his undergraduate tuition from his first to final year. “Her love, dedication, and unyielding belief in me have been my driving force, even after her passing,” he said.

During his undergraduate years, Godwin had no personal accommodation and squatted with friends throughout his studies.

“If not for the incredible support of Nigerians during the crowdfunding campaign, I wouldn’t be here today. Graduating against all odds is not just my victory; it’s a testament to God’s faithfulness and the power of a community coming together to support a dream,” he said.

A few months before relocating to the U.S., Godwin lost his mother to cancer, an event that shattered him emotionally. Coping with grief while adjusting to a new country and academic system became overwhelming, causing his grades to drop.

As a result, he lost his scholarship, and for a moment, it seemed like the end of his academic journey. But then, his academic advisor, Dr. Markoff, stepped in.

“She not only restored my scholarship but also restored my hope. Her patience, mentorship, and motherly care helped me heal and rediscover my passion for physics,” he said.

With Dr. Markoff’s support, Godwin reclaimed his academic excellence, winning the NSBP Best Poster Award and the APS Cash Prize Award in Houston, Texas—accomplishments that reminded him of his true potential.

Looking ahead, Godwin will be embarking on his PhD program immediately at Auburn University, Alabama, filled with gratitude for those who believed in him.
