Rory McIlroy’s emotions laid bare as Netflix capture “surprise” response to US Open heartbreak

Fans of Rory McIlroy and Full Swing can expect to see the Northern Irishman feature heavily in season three of the Netflix series, with the Northern Irishman as open and honest as ever.

Arguably the biggest moment of the PGA Tour season came at the expense of McIlroy at the US Open at Pinehurst. The 35-year-old finally looked set to end his 10-year wait for a fifth major championship, but a gut-wrenching finish allowed Bryson DeChambeau to swoop in and clinch the title.

It was a bitter pill to swallow for McIlroy, who infamously left the Pinehurst property within minutes of his LIV Golf rival rolling in the winning putt – a moment he watched on from the scoring room.

A statement from the McIlroy camp came the day after, before radio silence followed until the Scottish Open one month later. The beauty of Full Swing however is that the fly-on-the-wall documentary captures moments the regular TV broadcast are unable to, including McIlroy’s near-miss in North Carolina.

Whilst the world No. 3 was of course left heartbroken from the remarkable finish, Full Swing’s Executive Producer Chadd Mumm revealed golf fans tuning into season three – that will be released on Netflix on February 25 – will be left surprised with his response. “You see [McIlroy’s] soul laid bare, and you are right there with him at the hardest moment,” Mumm told Mirror Sport.

“For fans of Rory I think it gives you new context to the US Open heartbreak. In particular where it sits in his mind in terms of his heartbreak on the golf course. I think people will be surprised by his answer on how he felt after that.” When Full Swing launched in 2023 (covering the 2022 season), it was thought that McIlroy would not feature at all, before he finally opted to get on board late on.

Three seasons in, and the four-time major winner is now giving as much access as any player on Tour. “He is heavily featured again in this season, especially in the context of the [US Open] episode,” Mumm added. “He always delivers the goods. It is heartfelt, it is real. He always delivers.”

The inclusion of arguably the biggest name in the modern game is key to Full Swing, and it is something the executive producer is extremely grateful for. “It is hugely important because when Rory speaks the whole golf world listens,” Mumm commented. “That can be polairizing at times, but is always from the heart.

“He is so important to the show, to be able to see that perspective of the game’ biggest superstar aside from Tiger, and for him to be so willing to give us access in the middle of his competitive year, we are so grateful for him.” Whilst the US Open heartbreak looms over his season, McIlroy’s high points also made the cut too.

In episode two, fans of the Northern Irishman will get a behind-the-scenes look at his Zurich Classic of New Orleans win with Shane Lowry – including the post-victory karaoke session. Mumm also revealed that the cameras are once again rolling on the PGA Tour this year with a potential for a fourth Full Swing season.

The world of men’s professional golf has continued to provide storyline after storyline ever since Full Swing hit TV screens two years ago. One chapter McIlroy fans will be hoping to see in 2025 will no doubt be the Northern Irishman finally get his hands on major No. 5. If it is to happen you can guarantee the Netflix cameras will be there to capture every moment.
