Are You Being Served? (1972 vs 2025) Cast: Then and Now

In a nostalgic look back at one of Britain’s most beloved sitcoms, “Are You Being Served?” the series, which aired from 1972 to 1985, continues to resonate with fans decades after its end. Set in the fictional Grace Brothers department store, the show was known for its clever humor, memorable characters, and witty innuendos. Each character, from the flamboyant Mr. Humphrey to the eccentric Mrs. Slokum, brought unique charm and comedic flair, contributing to the show’s enduring legacy.

Molly Sudden, who played the colorful Mrs. Slokum, became an iconic figure in British television, known for her sharp wit and ever-changing hair colors. Born in 1922, she was 50 when the series began and enjoyed a long career in television before her passing in 2009 at the age of 86. John Inman, who portrayed the flamboyant Mr. Humphrey, was another standout, famous for his catchphrase “I’m free!” His work in the theater and television continued until his death in 2007, leaving a lasting mark on British comedy.

Frank Thornton’s Captain Peacock, the pompous floorwalker, and Nicholas Smith’s Mr. Rumbold, the often-bumbling manager, rounded out the memorable cast. Both actors continued to entertain audiences in various roles until their deaths, with Thornton passing away in 2013 and Smith in 2015.

Other beloved characters included Trevor Bannister’s cheeky Mr. Lucas, Arthur English’s witty maintenance man, and Wendy Richard’s sharp-tongued Miss Brahms. Richard later found success in “EastEnders,” while Bannister and English left their own legacies in British sitcoms.

The series also featured memorable guest characters like Harold Bennett’s Young Mr. Grace and Alfie Bass’s Mr. Goldberg, each contributing to the show’s humor and charm. Despite the passing of many cast members, their performances continue to be cherished by fans worldwide.

As the legacy of “Are You Being Served?” endures, the journeys of its stars remind us of the impact they made in the world of comedy, leaving behind a treasure trove of laughter for generations to come.
