The seventh Signature Event of the 2025 schedule is approaching, and so are predictions about the winner. With top names on the roster, deciding the winner is a tough task, but for some, the choice is clear. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who is defending his title at the Memorial Tournament, is the favorite for many. After showcasing the best of his career last year by winning 7 titles in a single season, the golfer struggled at the beginning of the 2025 season, but he has gotten his way back to his winning ways.
The 28-year-old, after the long wait, has secured two victories this season and set a strong foundation for his upcoming performance. And now, as he readies himself to play at the Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, one of the prominent names in the sports industry, Stephen Curry, has now joined the list of admirers of the American golfer. Recently, @siriusxmpgatour shared a video of the conversation, where the point guard was praising the 28-year-old.
The interviewer asked Curry, “I know you watch a lot of golf, seeing what Scottie Scheffler has done in the past three years as an athlete, what do you recognize in his ability to play at the highest level for so long?” Answering that, he said, “I think a lot of it is just his mental. I know there are a lot of talented golfers out here on the tour, and you see it week in, week out, somebody gets hot, but the level of consistency.” Starting from 2023, Scheffler has been amplifying his win count.
In 2023, he managed to win the WM Phoenix Open, THE PLAYERS Championship, and the Hero World Challenge while having 17 Top 10 finishes along with 21 Top 25 finishes. Then came 2024, where he won 7 times while playing 19 events. Further, he had 2 runner-up finishes with 16 Top 10 wins. As for the ongoing season, he has had two victories so far- The CJ CUP Byron Nelson and the PGA Championship.
Just last year, after grinding out at two-over-par 74, Scheffler won the Memorial Tournament and entered the U.S. Open at Pinehurst as the first player since Tom Watson in 1980 to have 5 wins before what was thought of as golf’s toughest test. But wait, there’s more. He became the first player to capture the Tournament with a final round over par after Jon Rahm shot 75. Will he carry the same momentum to the Jack Nicklaus-hosted Tournament this year is a thing the fans are most excited about.
But away from consistency, Curry also praised his s𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁, saying, “He seems to just have this knack for being able to answer the moment. I don’t know if you can teach that, you either have it or you don’t.” Well, that has been the s𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁 of Scheffler. The golfer recently at the Charles Schwab Challenge ended up in the deep rough, downhill after his tee shot. But despite the 10 feet approx. downhill, zero vision to the fairway, and deep rough, he made it back to the greens and saved the par. That’s the s𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁 the 37-year-old is talking about!
Though the two athletes come from different fields of sports, they have shared a great bond of mutual appreciation for their talent. Even earlier, in 2024, Curry placed his bet on Scheffler.
Stephen Curry’s long-time pick is Scottie Scheffler
The basketball sensation, last year, placed his bets on the golfer who had an exceptional year. Previously, when he was asked to make a choice between the NBA record for all time and getting a Masters invite, what do you think he chose? Surprisingly, he said, “Based on sheer numbers, I’m probably not gonna get the all-time scoring record in the NBA. LeBron’s going to have that one. So let me go and get that Masters invite.”
And as he voiced his preference about attendance, he made explicit his pick for the event as well. When asked about his favorite, he cited “Scottie Scheffler,” despite uncertainty over whether the golfer would play due to the timing of welcoming his son. The golfer was the priority and first pick of even the top names in the sport.
Even if Curry’s recent conversation is anything to go by, he has hinted at vouching for the golfer in the future as well. For him, Scheffler will continue to rise, given his stellar past performance and dominance. The Golden State Warriors star ended by saying, “I’m sure he is not done.”
