An 18-year-old boy named Mykale Baker has been rewarded for his hard work and determination with a sum of $22,000 to support his college education.
On the 21st of May, few hours after his high school graduation from Mills Creek High School, Mykale chose not to go and celebrate like other kids of his age. Instead, he headed straight to work at a Burger King in Georgia, United States.
Still wearing his graduation stole and medals, with plastic gloves on, he resumed for the evening rush and immediately started taking orders.
Baker’s dedication caught the eye of a customer named Maria Mendoza, who had just attended her own daughter’s graduation from the same school. Watching Mykale work that night left an impression on her.
She recorded a short TikTok video and later shared it online with a heartfelt message that celebrated his humility and determination. Her words touched people across the country.
The moment went viral, and without Mykale knowing, his story began to inspire thousands. Mendoza, moved by his strength, decided to do more than just share his story. She started a GoFundMe campaign with the hope of helping him continue his education.
Within days, the campaign raised over $22,000. On May 26, Mendoza returned to Burger King to surprise Mykale with the new development. Overwhelmed with emotion, he broke down in tears, hugging his mother and Mendoza as he received the news.
Baker admitted that due to his financial difficulties, he has yet to decide on his next line of action after school. He had considered taking a gap year, but with the help of the donations, he now sees the possibility of going straight to technical college to pursue a future in mechanical work.
“Thank you so much, I never thought this would happen to me. I’m very thankful,” Baker expressed in tears.
