Interior tour: An 18th-century cottage with a fresh approach to modern country style

An organic dairy farm set in the rolling countryside of Bruton in Somerset has restored a charming 18th-century cottage in its grounds to give guests a slice of rural English countryside charm. The home can accommodate up to eight guests, and is currently available to book for short breaks via Plum Guide.

The cottage, aptly named Lilac Wisterias, has been lovingly restored with a sensitivity to its original features, including the vaulted exposed oak beams, inglenook fireplace and flagstone floors. Beyond is an exquisite cottage garden with outdoor dining and a fire pit, framed with frothy wisteria. An old bull pen has been converted into a charming open-plan studio for early morning yoga, crafting or reading.

Inside, you’ll find a dreamy, sepia-toned, modern country design scheme, pairing classic country cottage features with some well-chosen vintage and midcentury pieces. It is sparing in its decoration which creates a wonderful sense of space and openness. Expansive, floor-to-ceiling windows have been installed to welcome floods of natural light, as well as a woodburner to counter chilly evenings.

Each room has a wonderful mix of patterned upholstery in blousy florals and rustic checks. Wooden floors are softened with ikat rugs, and the beds are layered up with quilts and cushions. This is a space designed for comfort and relaxation.

The kitchen is a real design treat, full of warm woods and terracottas, a sturdy kitchen island and wrap around banquette seating to accommodate large groups. It is here that you can prepare lunch using organic ingredients from the gardens, or if you’re looking for a holiday from cooking, the hosts can arrange for their chef to provide picnics, afternoon teas and suppers.

Bruton is home to cool cafes, independent boutiques, galleries and a reserve of farm-to-table restaurants. Away from these creative enclaves, winding lanes take you through Somerset’s rural delights, from the misty moors to its rugged coastline, with the route punctuated with familiar country pubs.

This property can be booked through Plum Guide here, which is like the Michelin Guide of holiday rentals, full of remarkable homes for the discerning traveller.
