How to grow Hoya from cuttings. Amazing 15 colors and types

Hoya plant propagationHoya plants are easy to propagate from stem cuttings, but you’ll need to gather a few tools before you begin. Grab the tools from the list below and keep reading for a step-by-step guide on how to propagate your hoya.

Tools and equipment requirementsTo propagate Hoya, you need the following tools and equipment:

– Clean, sterile scissors

– Root hormone

– A small pot or pot for planting

– Perlite, vermiculite, sand or other growing medium

Lay out all your tools and make sure your scissors are sterile. You can wipe them with bleach/water solution or hydrogen peroxide. If you’ve decided to make your own potting mix, mix it before you take your cutting. You can also choose a ready mix specially made for indoor plants like this indoor potting soil.

Propagation of Hoya from stem cuttingsPropagation from a stem cutting is the best way to propagate your hoya, and it is very easy to do. Just grab your tools from the list above, follow the steps below, and you’ll have as many propagated hoya plants as you can fit in your home!

How to take a stem cuttingTo take a stem cutting from a Hoya plant, first select a healthy stem that is at least 6 inches long with 3-4 leaves. Cut the stem just below a leaf node (the point where the leaves are attached to the stem) with your sterilized pruning shears and remove the lower set of leaves. Make sure the finished cutting has at least 2-3 healthy leaves.

Then dip the cut end of the stem into root hormone powder or gel. This will help encourage root growth. It is not required to get root growth, but it helps speed up the process and helps the plant get stronger faster. From here you can either place your cutting in soil or in a jar of just water to root.

Roots In WaterTo root your hoya in water, simply fill your container with clean water and place the cutting in the water. Do not submerge the leaves still attached to the cutting, as this would encourage rot to form on the leaves.

Place the glass or jar in a sunny location and wait for new roots to emerge. This can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. You will want to change the water every 2-3 days to give your cutting the best chance to grow new roots. You do not need to apply new rooting hormone at each water change.

Once your cutting has rooted, you can transplant it into soil.

In EarthRooting hoya in soil is still the preferred method, although water propagation is popular and easy to do as well. Simply fill your container with a well-draining potting mix and make a small hole in the soil where your cutting will go. Insert the cutting into the hole at least an inch down and lightly press the soil around it.

Water the cutting well and place it in a bright place without direct sunlight. Keep the soil moist but not wet and in about six weeks you should see new growth.
