Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has been spotted training with a private coach with his future very much up in the air. The 21-year-old has not played for the Red Devils since before he was suspended by the club following his arrest in January 2022, although he was included on their official retained list earlier this month after the charges against him were eventually dropped in February.
Greenwood had charges of attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour dropped in February. The forward has since returned to training with a private coach and was seen being put through his paces at a public sports centre in pictures obtained by The Sun. He was said to have been taking part in shooting drills and working on his close control with the ball over the course of the 90-minute session, although United are yet to make a decision on whether or not to bring him back into the fold.

The forward remains suspended by the Red Devils in spite of his recent inclusion on their end-of-season retained list, with club chiefs still believed to be mulling over whether or not to hand Greenwood another chance at Old Trafford. United decided to launch their own internal investigation earlier this year to decide his future.
This process is yet to be finalised but is nearing a conclusion that will see Greenwood discover what the immediate future holds for him, according to the Manchester Evening News. The report states that a final decision will soon be taken by the Glazer family in conjunction with United chief executive Richard Arnold, which suggests that a formal announcement could be made before the conclusion of the ongoing takeover process.

Greenwood has not played for United since featuring in their home victory against West Ham in January of last year. His return to training with a private coach suggests that he may be expecting a return to football at some point in the near future, although only time will tell if United will be prepared to give him the chance to rebuild his career as part of their squad next season.
Erik ten Hag has remained tight-lipped when quizzed on the possibility of bringing Greenwood back to United in recent months, with the Dutchman telling The Times last month that he will not be involved in making any binding decisions regarding the player’s future. However, he did say that Greenwood has ‘showed in the past that he is capable of doing that [scoring goals]’, which hints that a return to the squad for the forward is at least being considered behind closed doors at United.

Meanwhile, it has also been reported that he could be given a new lease of life abroad by way of a potential loan move, with The Sun having claimed that Juventus have already sounded out Greenwood’s representatives over the possibility of a temporary deal in Serie A next season.
Greenwood joined United at the age of six and has registered 129 senior appearances for the Red Devils since making his professional debut for the club in 2019. He has also won a single cap for England but has not played for the Three Lions since breaking Covid-19 restrictions while on international duty in Iceland in 2020.
The United academy graduate was sent home after he and Manchester City forward Phil Foden invited two Icelandic models to England’s team hotel in Reykjavik. Greenwood went on to miss out on a place in the squad that reached the final of Euro 2020 two summers ago.
