Have you ever heard a song that fit your own life so well, you fell in love with it instantly? The brand-new “American Idol” winner, Iam Tongi, did.
The 18-year-old’s dad instilled a love of music in Iam from the time he was a kid, but because his dad tragically passed away mere months before Iam auditioned for “American Idol,” he never got to see just how far his son took the passion he had given him.
So Iam spent his time on “Idol” paying tribute to his dad. This was how he ended up choosing the song “Monsters,” a song written by a man whose dad was in desperate need of a kidney transplant, to audition with.
But this is the best part: At the end of the competition, just before Iam was declared the winner, the singer/songwriter of “Monsters,” James Blunt, joined Iam on stage to perform the song with him as a duet!
If Iam’s connection to the song hadn’t been powerful enough already, adding Blunt to the mix brought everyone to tears: from Katy Perry, to the audience, to Iam himself.
