Production designer Beth Mickle lauded James Gunn’s creative vision for the upcoming DC Universe kickoff film Superman: Legacy.
Beth Mickle, the production designer behind Superman: Legacy, shared her thoughts about James Gunn’s creative process and collaborative style, applauding his visionary approach to the film.
In an interview with Screen Rant, production designer Beth Mickle praised the director and DC Films co-CEO James Gunn and his filmmaking approach while working on the highly anticipated movie. She highlighted Gunn’s creative process, visionary approach, and collaborative style, which make the production designer and the entire team feel at ease.
Mickle reflected on her excitement about working with the director. Emphasizing how the director stands out from others, she said, “We’re very lucky that he comes with a crystal clear vision of what he wants his movies to be. And that’s not often the case.” She also said, “A lot of times a production designer and the costume designer find it for the director. But he comes always with a brilliant first draft of the script, which is also very rare, and a really clear idea of how the movie’s going to be shot, what he wants it to feel like. He has strong references. He has fantastical musical references, and he’s really articulate about it.”
According to Mickle, the team was encouraged to delve into their creativity, which they shared with Gunn. Despite his strong vision, Gunn provided substantial creative freedom and feedback, allowing everyone to contribute meaningfully to the project. She called working with him an enjoyable experience for the whole team.
A New Era for DC Films
James Gunn has directed some of the most successful superhero movies of all time including Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, and The Suicide Squad. Gunn, along with Peter Safra, was announced as the co-chairman and CEO of the newly formed DC Studios in October 2022. The duo made some strong decisions that include ending the DC Extended Universe with the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
As the first film in the new DC Universe, Superman: Legacy holds great significance for Gunn and DC Films. Despite recent debunked rumors, Gunn’s clear plans for the DC Universe’s future have fans eagerly awaiting his take on iconic characters like Superman and Lois Lane, along with relatively less popular DC Comics characters. As the film’s release draws nearer, anticipation continues to grow, with fans excited to see the beloved character return to the big screen.
