Conjoined twins were discovered by ultrasound; doctors advised abortion, but destiny took an unexpected turn.

The final result brought peace of mind and admiration to everyone, and celebrated the unyielding strength of the team of doctors and two 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren. Ms. Hannah, who is from Northern Ireland, and Mr. Dan Bateson have a beautiful love and after getting married in 2016, they have been trying to have 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren for two years without success. They then go to a fertility center for assistance.

Ms. Hannah was advised to lose weight before starting any medical therapy. She underwent a surgery to remove part of her stomach to lose weight quickly. Then, after a six-month wait, she became pregnant in the summer of 2021. During a 12 week ultrasound, the couple was told she was pregnant with twins, but there were some abnormalities.

The twins are in a special condition.

These two fetuses are of the MCMA (monochorionic monoamniotic) type, which means they are identical, sharing the same amniotic sac. This type of twin has a higher risk of complications. During the next ultrasound, Ms. Hannah was shocked to learn that the two fetuses were conjoined from the chest to the pelvis, but fortunately they had two separate hearts.

“Every time we go for an ultrasound, we want to hear the beating of our two hearts, but at the same time we are scared to see them so close together,” Hannah said. During an examination at University College London Hospital, the couple were told they had the option to terminate the pregnancy. However, they decided to keep both 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren and the hospital pledged to fully support them.

Two extremely strong and energetic 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren. When reaching the 26th week of pregnancy, doctors advise the couple to move closer to the hospital to be monitored and handle unusual situations that may occur.

Then a caesarean section was performed to ensure the safety of the twins. It took 24 hours for the mother to see her two 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren. The two 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren were very strong and growing well, and after 3 weeks they were discharged from the hospital.

In July 2022, surgery to separate the two 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren was postponed due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, in September of the same year, this important surgery was carried out after days of waiting and careful preparation. The surgery took up to 18 hours, and the father-of-two recalls: “It was the longest day of my life. The medical team kept us updated. Obsessions”.

The twins are growing up day by day. After the success of the surgery, it took two and a half months for the doctors to come to the conclusion that Annie and Issie were healthy enough to be discharged. During the next period, the two 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren must learn to play, interact, and move. However, the journey is not over yet. “There are many more surgeries in the coming years to help them become normal. But we believe that our whole family will make it through,” the mother shared.

Currently, the two 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren are very healthy and lovely. Because she had to spend more time taking care of her two 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren, the mother had to quit her job. They have set up a fundraising website to support the family’s expenses. Although there are still many difficulties ahead, the couple’s daily joy is seeing their two 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren playing and having fun together.

Although there are still many challenges ahead, the family of the couple Hannah and Dan do not stop trying and hoping. Two 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren, Annie and Issie, have proven their strength and patience from the time they were in the womb. They overcame incredible hardships and showed amazing resilience and growth.

The whole family has become a source of encouragement and pride for each other. Every step forward in the lives of these two 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren is an affirmation that nothing is impossible with the love, hope and support of those around them.
